How we started.
Did the world really need another “cash for houses” or “we buy houses” company? In an industry flooded with sleazy cash buyers and pushy salesmen, I wanted to do things differently. I wanted to create a company that put people first and profit second.
2020
It all started in 2020, when I bought my first home at just 20 years old. I had already fallen head over heels with real estate, but my first fix-and-flip project was far from a success.
Everything that could’ve gone wrong—did.
My contractor didn’t show up for weeks, which should have raised a red flag. Unfortunately, I was inexperienced and naive. When he finally did, he worked for a couple of days, disappeared, then repeated the cycle—over and over again. I had no experience managing people let alone contractors, so I assumed this was normal. It wasn’t. After 3 months, I had burned through my entire renovation budget, and the house was only about 30% complete. The work that had been done? Subpar at best.
I was out of money. Way behind schedule. And I had borrowed the original funds to buy and renovate the house. With no choice but to keep pushing forward, I started sinking my own savings into the project—until that ran dry too due to ongoing issues. Then, I had to borrow even more, which was terrifying on a failing project.
Unexpected storms and the contractor delays pushed us into the harsh Midwest winter in Cleveland, making it nearly impossible to stay on schedule and delaying exterior tasks. Permitting setbacks added even more frustration, with approvals taking longer than anticipated and inspections failing due to mistakes made by unreliable contractors. As if that weren’t enough, I also dealt with theft—both stolen materials from the property and money lost to dishonest contractors who disappeared after taking deposits.
I hired and fired about 5 or 6 contractors before I finally gave up and decided to take matters into my own hands. I bought the tools I needed and, with the help of my father—who was a contractor earlier in his career—I finished the house myself. We spent 136 days working late nights until 2, 3, even 4 AM just to make the house sellable. Not complete, just sellable. What was supposed to be a 3-month, $40,000 renovation ballooned into an 8-month ordeal costing over $85,000.
And then came the next battle: selling.
I needed to sell fast because I had drained my bank account, maxed out my credit cards, and borrowed as much money as I possibly could—not to mention, I had purchased 2 other properties at the same time. I was in way over my head.
